Emerging Applications of Nutritional Ketosis: Disease Management to Operational Performance

Abstract:

While studying strategies to enhance the safety and performance of Navy SEAL divers breathing high-pressure oxygen, Dr. D’Agostino observed the neuroprotective and anti-cancer effects of therapeutic ketosis. 

This lecture focuses on how dietary manipulation can be a powerful metabolic-based therapy for suppressing tumor growth by targeting a broad array of signaling pathways and oncogenic drivers. Numerous research models have provided the platform for the investigation of therapeutic synergy between dietary regimens, drugs, and other modalities. This lecture provides an overview of the most promising therapeutic synergies in animal models that can be readily extrapolated to patients and large-scale human clinical trials focused on human performance and resilience. Included is information on how to adjust macronutrient ratios to shift metabolic physiology into a therapeutic state that has been validated in preclinical animal studies and human clinical trials. The lecture also addresses the fundamental metabolic differences between cancer cells and normal cells with descriptions and diagrams of upregulated metabolic pathways and selective utilization of specific metabolite substrates and signaling mechanisms. 

Speaker bio:

Dr. Dominic D’Agostino is a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine. He is also a Research Scientist at the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC). His laboratory develops and tests nutritional strategies and metabolic-based supplements for neurological disorders, seizures, cancer, and metabolic wellness. He was a research investigator and crew member on NASA’s Extreme Environment Mission Operation (NEEMO 22) and has a personal interest in environmental medicine and methods to enhance safety and physiological resilience in extreme environments. His research is supported by the Office of Naval Research (ONR), Department of Defense (DoD), private organizations, and foundations.

  1. Understand how dietary manipulation associated with proper implementation of nutritional ketosis changes metabolic physiology, metabolic biomarkers, and hormones. 
  2. Present a review of studies implementing therapeutic ketosis in preclinical animal model systems and an overview of current human clinical trials.
  3. Offer a description of current research and future strategies that combine nutritional ketosis with other therapeutic modalities.
