Abstract:

Over the last 50 years, health care has become a business that focuses on generating revenue for health-care insiders: doctors, hospital systems, Big Pharma, and the medical device industry. Is there any way to justify $36,000 per year for a drug (Dupixent) to treat eczema? Or $48,000 per year for a drug for rheumatoid arthritis (Humira)? Or $9,000 for a procedure as simple as a stress echocardiogram? Every year, $3 trillion dollars are spent in the American health-care system, yet health and longevity are deteriorating. Health care has done little to combat the worst epidemics of obesity/overweight and Type 2 diabetes. Meanwhile, revenues and profits for Big Pharma and other health-care insiders typically grow at double-digit annual rates — sickness is profitable.

Significantly, it has been possible and practical to regain health — reversing Type 2 diabetes, losing weight, augmenting immunity, reversing hundreds of health conditions without drugs or medical procedures — at virtually no cost all along. Doing so, however, involves rejecting many conventional notions of health, healthy nutrition, interactions with doctors, and screening practices.

In lieu of these conventions, Dr. William Davis recommends embracing a style of eating that mimics the eating behavior of primitive humans, restoring nutrients missing from modern life and working to reestablish a healthy microbiome by pushing back against the increasingly common conditions of small intestinal bacterial and fungal overgrowth.

Speaker Bio:

Dr. William Davis, MD, FACC, is a cardiologist and author of New York Times best seller Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health, Wheat Belly Total Health: The Ultimate Grain-Free Health and Weight-Loss Life Plan, two cookbooks, the Wheat Belly Cookbook and the Wheat Belly 30-Minutes (Or Less!) Cookbook — also New York Times best sellers — and, most recently, the Wheat Belly 10-Day Grain Detox. His books have sold over 3 million copies in the North American market and are published in 37 countries.

He has appeared on the Dr. Oz Show, CBS This Morning, National Public Radio, Live With Kelly (Ripa), Bill O’Reilly, and The Colbert Report, as well as on the covers of First for Women and Woman’s World magazines, the New York Post, the Chicago Tribune, The Atlantic, and Women’s Health.

Davis has built a substantial online presence on his Wheat Belly blog, drawing more than 700,000 visits per month and over 20 million views since launch in September 2011. More than a book or social media, the Wheat Belly phenomenon has proven to be a movement, growing over time and creating an audience eager for food solutions that are healthy, delicious, convenient, and consistent with the Wheat Belly message.

Davis is a graduate of the St. Louis University School of Medicine, with training in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease at the Ohio State University Hospitals, and advanced training in angioplasty at the Case Western Reserve University Hospitals, where he also served as Director of the Cardiovascular Fellowship and Assistant Professor of Medicine. He now focuses on preventive care and providing self-empowering strategies to the public through his books and projects.

Learning objectives:

  1. Recognize modern health care for the profit-focused enterprise it has become.
  2. Develop awareness of the strategies and tools available to everyone seeking to regain their health.
  3. Understand why rejecting conventional notions of healthy eating; restoring nutrients whose roles are programmed into the human genetic code; and reversing a disrupted microbiome serve as important interventions in human health.
